How to Use Augmented Reality at Events and Conferences

Let’s face it. Augmented reality (AR) is a pretty big deal these days. Everywhere you look, people are talking about how augmented reality is being used by the world’s best-known corporations to improve their customer experience and increase their marketing ROI.

But how are event professionals using augmented reality to make meetings and events more engaging for their attendees? That’s the question Successful Meetings magazine asked Jamie Turner in a recent cover story interview.

“In some cases, the impact of AR on business can be over-hyped,” said Jamie. “But the fact is that AR and other new technologies can be used by event professionals and meeting professionals to improve how people engage at conferences and meetings.”

Jamie pointed out that there’s a difference between augmented reality and virtual reality, which are two concepts that are often confused.

Augmented reality is a technology that augments or improves what someone is seeing through their smartphone screen. In other words, it lays data or graphics over a live view screen.

Virtual reality is when a virtual world is created and is seen through goggles or a smartphone screen. Virtual reality is often used for entertainment by gamers and other computer connoisseurs.

Both technologies can be used effectively by event professionals and meeting professionals to make their conference more engaging and enjoyable for attendees.
